Dr. James Crowe, Robert Carnahan and their colleagues in the Vanderbilt Vaccine Center won the Gold medal in the 2022 R&D 100 awards for their discovery and development of long-acting antibodies that protect against COVID-19. The discovery of these antibodies has led to the development of Evusheld, pre-exposure therapy to prevent COVID-19 for adults and children over 12 with compromised immune systems or a history of severe adverse reactions to a COVID-19 vaccine. International nuclear waste management pioneer and member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering Frank L. Parker, 96, died Aug. 10 in Nashville. Parker was named Distinguished Professor of Environmental and Water Resources Engineering, Emeritus, and professor of civil and environmental engineering, emeritus, in 2011 after a 43-year career at Vanderbilt.
