Feb. 24, 2020—Political bipartisanship, the impact of ‘70s television, and issues surrounding race, gender and sports are among the spring classes being offered by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Vanderbilt.
May. 22, 2019—As communities throughout the South struggle to determine appropriate ways of recognizing Civil War history, Jane Landers, Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of History, and Postdoctoral Fellow Angela Sutton have worked to draw attention to Fort Negley as a site that teaches the tragedy of slavery as well as celebrates the contributions of free and enslaved black people to Nashville and the nation’s history.

Mar. 22, 2018—Kids of all ages can find and take home a 400-million-year-old souvenir and learn all about the hunt for clues to the ancient past at Fort Negley April 7.
Mar. 15, 2017—Fossils at the Fort is happening on Saturday, March 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Fort Negley Visitors Center and Park. The event is free and will take place rain or shine.
Living History: Students Trace Nashville’s Black History as Part of a New Series of University Courses
Mar. 7, 2017—Thirteen students met during the fall semester for a class called Historic Black Nashville. Taught by Jane Landers and Daniel Sharfstein, the course is part of a new initiative known as the University Courses program, a collaborative model that brings together faculty from different parts of the university to teach students from a variety of majors.
Mar. 24, 2015—Vanderbilt students will give visitors a glimpse of Tennessee’s ancient past April 4 by guiding fossil hunts, identifying fossils and giving presentations and guided tours.
Oct. 27, 2014—Vanderbilt’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is partnering with Fort Negley for “Day of the Dead: Ancient Animals and Historic Peoples Among Us” on Saturday, Nov. 1.
