Since the pandemic began in spring 2020, COVID-19 has affected people in many ways. While most people with COVID-19 recover within 10 to 14 days, some individuals may experience lingering health issues for weeks, months or even years after their initial diagnosis—a condition known as Long COVID. The CDC estimates that 6.8 percent of American adults currently experience Long COVID, with Tennessee being among the seven states with the highest rates of these lingering symptoms.

Vanderbilt is committed to keeping the university community safe and informed. Information, resources and avenues of support are now available on the Health and Wellness website for people living with or caring for someone with Long COVID. There is also information for university community members who may interact or work with those with Long COVID and want to know how to best support them.

The Long COVID website resources and information include:

Tips and Resources for Employees

Employee Affinity Groups

  • Employees with Long COVID are welcome and encouraged to join the Disabilities and Chronic Health Conditions affinity group.
    • This group is a place for employees who identify as having visible or invisible disabilities, chronic mental or physical health conditions, and their allies.
    • The group gathers to address and discuss issues that affect the group, such as discrimination, misconceptions, mental health, navigating workplace interactions and other relevant topics.
  • For more information or to join, please sign up here or contact Jonathan Santana and Kelly Croteau.

Americans with Disabilities Act

  • According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Long COVID may qualify as a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
    • Vanderbilt employees who believe they have a disability should contact their department supervisor or the Equal Opportunity and Access Office.
    • Accommodations are made on a case-by-case basis depending on the specific limitations an employee has as well as their job duties and work environment.

Be an Ally

  • Provide support and compassion and be understanding and willing to adapt.
  • Foster an inclusive workplace culture where employees feel comfortable discussing their health conditions and seeking support.
  • Respect any boundaries or requests for accommodations your coworker may have communicated to you or the team.
  • Celebrate their progress and achievements, no matter how small, and show appreciation for their contributions to the team.
