Vanderbilt University will celebrate Earth Month during April with events aimed at education and engagement around Vanderbilt sustainability programs and initiatives.
Earth Month events include the following:
Monday, March 25
Sustainability in Printing
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Sarratt Promenade
This educational event with VU Printing Services will tell the story of the print industry’s past and current efforts in sustainability. This includes an interactive breakdown of varying recyclable paper contents and a head-to-head comparison with digital media’s sustainability. There will be giveaways for attendees.
Wednesday, April 3
Zeppos College and West End Neighborhood Sustainability Tour
11 a.m to noon at Zeppos College
Join Vanderbilt University Project Manager Bob Grummon, Landscape Architect James Moore, and Sustainability Project Manager Chelsea Hamilton on a tour the West End Neighborhood, including Zeppos Residential College to celebrate Earth and Arbor Days. This one-hour tour will depart from the front of Zeppos College. The group will first learn about the LEED design process of Zeppos College (certification pending), followed by a tour of the re-imagined West End Neighborhood. Guests should plan on walking or standing for the duration. The tour will include some steps, but please let us know if there are mobility concerns. Saturday, April 20
Nashville’s Earth Day Celebration
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Centennial Park
Across the street from campus, this free event brings the Nashville community together to celebrate our planet, inspire positive environmental change and support sustainable small businesses and nonprofits. Nashville Earth Day will feature engaging and educational activities from a variety of exhibitors and vendors, including local growers and makers, nonprofits, sustainable small businesses and state/metro government agencies.
Monday, April 22
Rand Farmers Market
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Rand Patio
Hosted by Vanderbilt Campus Dining, the Rand Farmers Market will be on the Rand patio on April 22 in celebration of Earth Day. The event will feature an assortment of locally sourced fruits and vegetables, in addition to small-batch local and regional specialty foods, plus product giveaways. Students, faculty and staff members are invited to attend the event. The Rand Farmers Market is meal plan eligible.
Growing 101
Noon to 2 p.m. on Rand Patio
This is a first-of-its-kind outdoor educational event focused on the importance of knowing how to grow and maintain your own crops, trees and plants—and how this ultimately leads to a more sustainable community. The event will feature speakers from both Campus Dining and Grounds crew. Free margherita pizza will be provided by Campus Dining, with some ingredients harvested from the Tower Gardens, as well as the opportunity to take a campus arboretum tour.
Wednesday, April 24
Arbor Day Arboretum Tour
Noon to 1 p.m. at Kirkland Hall
Join Vanderbilt University Landscape Architect James Moore on an arboretum tour to celebrate Earth and Arbor days. This one-hour tour will depart from the front of Kirkland Hall. The group will visit a wide range of trees, including some that were planted on campus this spring. Guests should plan on walking or standing for the duration. The tour will be capped at 30 people; please register here.
