Vanderbilt Human Resources is partnering with Vanguard to offer two free retirement investing workshops for employees. Both sessions will be presented by Vanguard, a Vanderbilt Retirement Plan vendor.
“Grow Tax-Free with a Roth 403b” is scheduled for Tuesday, April 15, from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in the Wadlington A and B conference rooms.
Roth 403b contributions are made with after-tax dollars rather than pre-tax dollars. Because the taxes are paid up front, you won’t owe taxes when you withdraw from the account later, as long as you’ve reached age 59 and a half and made your first contributions at least five years earlier.
At this session, you will learn:
- The basics of Roth 403b accounts and how withdrawals work;
- Who may and may not benefit from a Roth 403b;
- How to build a portfolio that suits your financial goals and risk tolerance; and
- How to start using a Roth 403b.
“Wise Investing” is scheduled for April 15 from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in the Wadlington A and B conference rooms.
This session is suggested for those new to investing. You will learn:
- Basic facts of mutual funds and how to select funds;
- The main types of assets mutual funds hold: short-term reserves, bonds and stocks;
- How to build a portfolio that suits your financial goals and risk tolerance; and
- How to use investment guidance tools.
The workshops are open to all faculty and staff, regardless of age or participation in a retirement plan. You can attend one or both sessions, and no registration is required. Please note that space is limited and seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis.
As a reminder, Vanderbilt employees who participate in the retirement plan are eligible for free retirement counseling sessions with certified professionals. There is no cost for the sessions—free counseling is a benefit of participating in the Vanderbilt University Retirement Plan. To schedule an appointment, see the Individual Retirement Plan Counseling website.
