VUPS has launched a drone first-responder program to enhance emergency response and support the safety of the campus community. The drones—advanced Skydio X10 systems—let trained public safety personnel see active incidents from the air in real time, which helps responders assess situations and coordinate resources more effectively. August J. Washington, senior associate vice chancellor for public safety and chief of police, will become senior adviser to the vice chancellor for administration on Aug. 1. He will contribute to long-range planning and strategic initiatives across the Division of Administration, focusing on operational excellence, campus safety and cross-departmental collaboration. During the week of May 12-16, 2025, Vanderbilt University Public Safety will be rotating personnel through a series of functional preparedness and readiness activities at various locations across campus. Additionally, video crews will be recording educational materials to better prepare the VU community regarding campus active assailant response procedures.
