In the final issue of each month, the Register publishes grants in excess of $25,000 that were awarded the previous month. The Division of Sponsored Research received notification in January that the following grants had been awarded:

Alfredo Artiles, Department of Special Education in Peabody College, has been awarded a grant of $65,000 by the Department of Education for “Technical Assistance Center on Disproportionate Representation of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students in Special Education.”

Theodore Bapty, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $299,590 by the Department of Defense for “Constraint Based Real-Time Program Composition.”

Randolph Blake, Department of Psychology in the School of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $226,500 by the Public Health Service for “Mechanisms of Perceptual Organization in Human Vision.”

Kenneth Catania, Department of Biological Sciences in the School of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $80,000 by the Searle Scholars Program for “Specialized Touch Systems as Models for the Exploration of Mammalian Brain Organization and Sensory Processing.”

Peter Cummings, Department of Chemical Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $86,227 by the Department of Energy for “Molecular Simulation of the Electrical Double Layer.”

Martin Egli, Department of Biological Sciences in the School of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $232,540 by the Public Health Service for “Structure and Function of Nucleic Acid Therapeutics.”

Joseph Hamilton, Department of Physics and Astronomy in the School of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $305,000 by the Department of Energy for “Experimental Nuclear Physics.” Akunuri Ramayya is co-principal investigator.

Carl Johnson, Department of Biological Sciences in the School of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $123,548 by the National Science Foundation for “Bioluminescence Resonance Energy Transfer (BRET): A Tool to Explore Protein-Protein Interactions in Arabidopsis.”

Gabor Karsai, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $679,557 by the Department of Defense for “Model-Based Synthesis of Generators for Embedded Systems.”

Gabor Karsai, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $177,688 by the Department of Defense for “Web-based Open Tool Integration Framework.”

Kazuhiko Kawamura, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $625,000 by the Department of Defense for “Acquisition of Autonomous Behaviors by Robotic Assistants.” Richard Alan Peters, Robert Bodenheimer, and Nilanjan Sarkar are co-principal investigators.

Akos Ledeczi, The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering has been awarded a grant of $679,560 by the Department of Defense for “Pattern-Oriented Composition of Middleware Services for Networked Embedded Software Technology (NEST).” Vijay Raghavan and Kenneth Frampton are co-principal investigators.

Anita Jansen, Department of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Engineering has been awarded a grant of $237,825 by the Public Health Service for “Brain Tumor and Tumor Margin Identification Using Optical Spectroscopy.” Steve Toms and Mahlon Johnson are co-principal investigators.

Martin Rapisarda, Owen Graduate School of Management, has been awarded a grant of $210,000 by the Tennessee Valley Authority for “Tennessee Valley Authority–Executive Education Program.”

Nilanjan Sarkar, Department of Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $40,000 by the Department of Defense for “Online Fault-Adaptive Control of Hybrid Systems.” Gautam Biswas is co-principal investigator.

Charles Singleton, Department of Biological Sciences in the School of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $125,000 by the National Science Foundation for “Functional Analysis of Ammonia Transporters During Development of Distyostelium.”

Lilianna Solnica-Krezel, Department of Biological Sciences in the Department of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $298,179 by the Public Health Service for “Genetic Analysis of Convergent Extension in Zebrafish.”

Lilianna Solnica-Krezel, Department of Biological Sciences in the Department of Arts and Science has been awarded a grant of $251,156 by the Public Health Service for “Genetic Regulation of Somite Morphogenesis in Zebrafish.”

Janos Sztipanovits, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $508,014 by the National Science Foundation for “Foundations of Hybrid and Embedded Software Systems.” Gabor Karsai is co-principal investigator.

Laurence Zwiebel, Department of Biological Science in the School of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $38,220 by the World Health Organization for “Isolation and Characterization of Odorant Receptor Genes from Aedes Aegypti Mosquitoes.”

Correction: In the Jan. 13 issue of the Register, Sandra Rosenthal’s department was incorrectly listed. Rosenthal is a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry in the School of Arts and Science.
