Vanderbilt breaks ground on Central Utilities Initiative Phase II; reminders about navigating construction on campus

THINGS TO KNOW: 

  • Central Utilities Initiative Phase I is nearly complete, including the opening of Highland Energy Plant in January 2025. 
  • Central Utilities Initiative Phase II will break ground and include the installation of new construction fencing between the Student Life Center and the Studio Arts Building. 
  • University Club demolition, which includes a staging area near Stapleton Hall, is planned.  

It’s time to celebrate! The Central Utilities Initiative Phase I is nearly complete, including the Highland Energy Plant that will open in January 2025. 

Vanderbilt’s utilities upgrades will roll on in 2025, starting with the groundbreaking on CUI Phase II in early January. This work will transition the across 25th Avenue roadway east into Central Neighborhood. 

The work will take place on the promenade between the Student Life Center and the Studio Arts Building, behind the Studio Arts Building and behind Stapleton in Branscomb Quad. It will also include the demolition of the University Club.  

There will be accessible, safe pedestrian and vehicle pathways throughout the project to minimize disruption on campus. Construction noise is expected during work hours—8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

VEHICLES

Updates: 

  • Closure of lot 16 along Garland Avenue. 
  • There will be periodic single-lane closures on Vanderbilt Place near 25th Avenue. Flaggers will be onsite to direct traffic flow.  
  • Kensington Avenue between Natchez Trace and 25th Avenue South is open.  

Continuing impacts: 

  • 25th Avenue is closed between Children’s Way and the Student Life Center.  
  • The 25th Avenue Garage entrances to the 25th Avenue Garage and West Garage is closed. 
  • Jess Neely Drive between 25th Avenue and Natchez Trace is permanently closed to vehicle traffic.  
  • Natchez Trace between Jess Neely and the entrance to the Marriott at Vanderbilt hotel is closed.  
  • 24th Avenue South will remain open. 

PEDESTRIANS

Updates: 

  • The promenade between the Student Life Center and the Studio Arts Building is closed. Alternative routes are established and marked. 
  • All sidewalks along Children’s Way are accessible.  
  • The Student Life Center and Studio Arts Building are still accessible from 25th Avenue.  
  • The sidewalks along Kensington Avenue between Natchez Trace and 25th Avenue are open. 
  • Students should exit Branscomb Quad onto Vanderbilt Place for easiest navigation. Take Vanderbilt Place to 25th Avenue South to enter the Frist Athletics Village, or take Vanderbilt Place through the West End Neighborhood to access main campus. 

Continuing impacts: 

  • Pedestrian pathway from Garland Avenue along 24th Avenue South is open.  
  • Bicyclists should dismount in marked areas. 
  • Pedestrian pathways along 25th Avenue are open.  

All pedestrian and vehicle routes are subject to change, updates will be shared in MyVU and on the Facilities Instagram and X accounts.
