International Student and Scholar Services invites you to World on Wednesdays, which gives students, faculty and Vanderbilt community members the chance to engage with other parts of campus through presentations on topics that address and open discussion on a breadth of global issues and experiences.
Topic: “Water and Food Security in Sri Lanka and the United States”
What does the United States have in common with Sri Lanka, a small island nation in the Indian Ocean? Quite a bit, actually. Similar agricultural pressures face both nations—from climate change to urbanization—which is prompting them to produce more food while using less water.
The global food trade links Sri Lanka and the United States, but the two nations are unique, with their own histories and cultural identities toward water management. Embark on a journey with Thushara Gunda, an environmental engineering Ph.D. student, as she discusses what she has learned about the water and food management of each country through the lens of the other.
