WOW March 16: ‘Assessing Efforts to Combat Crime in Central America’

International Student and Scholar Services invites you to World on Wednesdays, which gives students, faculty and Vanderbilt community members the chance to engage with other parts of campus through presentations on topics that address and open discussion on a breadth of global issues and experiences.

Topic: “Assessing Efforts to Combat Crime and Violence in Central America: A Multi-Year, Multi-Country Impact Evaluation by the Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP)”

With the rising prevalence of crime and violence in Central America, USAID has implemented interventions in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama to reduce crime and increase security through community programming and creating opportunities for at-risk youth.

LAPOP’s purpose is to evaluate the effectiveness of these programs. LAPOP’s design combines qualitative and quantitative methods, including conducting more than 29,000 interviews over a number of decades. Findings indicate that these community-based crime programs have positive effects on a multitude of indicators, and that encouraging community and civil service participation in the prevention of crime can increase security.
