Join the Vanderbilt Acorns! VRWC hosts summer youth swim league

The Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center is sponsoring the Acorn Swim Team for summer 2015. The goal of the team is to offer Nashville youth, ages 4-18, the opportunity to learn new swimming skills and improve existing ones. The program also aims to enhance community spirit by allowing participants to meet and socialize with other young people in the community; teach and encourage sportsmanship; and create a fun-filled yet competitive summer swim experience for each swimmer and their family.

Children 7 and up must be able to swim one length of a 25-meter pool using any stroke. Swimmers will be allowed to hold onto the side of pool or lane line floats during the trial test; however, swimmers will not be allowed to pull themselves forward or touch the bottom of the pool.

Children ages 4-6 must be able to swim 15 yards unassisted initially, and 25 yards unassisted by the third week of swimming.

Cost for the 2015 swim season is $165 per swimmer. This includes a nonrefundable one-time $50 deposit. Please note that the cost does not include a team swimsuit or swim cap, which must be purchased separately.

Practices will be held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7 to 8 a.m. for ages 7 and up, and from 8 to 8:30 a.m. for ages 6 and under. Tuesday and Thursday practices will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. for ages 7 and up, while practice for the 6 and under group will be held from 4:30 to 5 p.m.
