Dependents of faculty and staff can get discount on summer tuition at VU

Students who are dependents of Vanderbilt staff or faculty can enroll in 3–15 credit hours during Summer Session and pay half the cost of the regular Summer Session tuition for all undergraduate courses offered on campus. This 50 percent tuition discount applies only to on-campus summer courses; housing, off-campus or abroad summer courses, books, Blair School music fees and other non-tuition expenses are excluded.

This summer session tuition discount is distinct and independent from the tuition benefit administered by Vanderbilt Human Resources. It has no bearing on the eight-semester rule, waiting period, or the 24-semester family limit. The Summer Session Tuition Discount for Dependents form must be submitted to HR Processing by April 14, 2015, in order to be considered for summer 2015.

Students who are not regular Vanderbilt students must enroll through the Division of Unclassified Studies (DUS) as “transient” students and will have to meet DUS enrollment standards. Summer Session courses will be available first to current Vanderbilt students and then to DUS students on a first-come, first-enrolled basis. April 17, 2015, is the deadline for DUS applications for May Session 2014; May 23 is the application deadline for the 1st Session and Full Session; and June 27 is the deadline for the 2nd Session.

Rules and regulations for dependents of VU employees

Do you have to participate in the HR tuition benefit program?

No, but the student must be validated as a qualified dependent by the Vanderbilt HR office before April 16. See the Vanderbilt HR website for this process. This discount only applies to those students who are qualified dependents of full-time faculty and staff of Vanderbilt. “Qualified” means that they are within the IRS guidelines for being considered dependent children. Full-time employment status means that the staff member has completed at least the 90-day probationary period and is scheduled to work at least 30 hours per week.

Must the dependent be enrolled in or accepted to college either at Vanderbilt or elsewhere?

Yes, this discount applies to all qualified dependent children of full-time faculty and staff who are already attending Vanderbilt or who have been accepted by DUS as “transient” students. This does not apply to “pre-freshmen” or “adult learners” who have been admitted to DUS.
