Vanderbilt professor Jimenez elected president of National Reading Conference

Robert T. Jiménez, professor of language, literacy and culture at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of education and human development, was recently elected president of the National Reading Conference.

The National Reading Conference is a professional community that engages in literacy research and dialogue surrounding literacy and its related topics. The NRC supports professional development of emerging and established scholars and advocates research-informed improvements in education.

“Robert Jiménez is a distinguished scholar who will bring an understanding of bilingual learners and bilingual literacy strategies to his service to the National Reading Conference,” Camilla Benbow, Patricia and Rodes Hart Dean of Education and Human Development, said. “We applaud his election to this important position.”

Jiménez currently teaches courses in research methods, second language literacy and issues related to the education of Latino/Latina students. His research focuses on historical, transnational and economic influences on literacy learning of linguistically diverse students as well as alternative literacies used by these students.

Jiménez received his doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He previously served as a faculty member at the University of Oregon and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and as both a bilingual and a migrant teacher in Northern Illinois.
