Risko elected vice president of the International Reading Association; will be president in 2011

Victoria Risko, professor of education at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College, was recently elected vice president of the International Reading Association. She will serve as vice president 2009-2010, president elect 2010-2011 and president 2011-2012.

“Victoria Risko exemplifies a commitment to professional service that characterizes many Peabody College faculty,” Camilla P. Benbow, Patricia and Rodes Hart Dean of Education and Human Development, said. “She will bring excellent leadership to the International Reading Association and to its efforts to strengthen literacy throughout the world.”

Risko served as a member of the IRA board of directors from 2002-2005. She was also chair of the Teacher Education Research Task Force, co-chair of the Commission on Diverse Learners and chair of the IRA Video and Literacy Special Interest Group.

Risko is the past-president of The College Reading Association, an international organization for literacy educators and researchers, and is currently a co-editor of the annual conference yearbook of the National Reading Conference.

The International Reading Association is a nonprofit global network committed to worldwide literacy. The organization has over 85,000 members and supports literacy professionals through multiple resources, advocacy efforts, volunteerism and professional development activities.
