Academically talented 5th and 6th graders taking part in the Saturday Academy at Vanderbilt for the Young, or SAVY, will have a chance to tour a trailer decked out with cutting-edge, computer-aided gizmos and interactive technology Saturday, Feb. 14, from 10 to 11 a.m. in Lot 111 on the corner of 19th and Edgehill avenues.
The trailer, hosted by Schneider Electric, will give students participating in the “Connected: Wiring, Electricity and More” SAVY program the opportunity to see firsthand the types of electrical innovations they have been discussing in the classroom. The trailer, known as HERCULES (Harris Electric Rolling Center Leader Edge Solutions), will contain automation and control equipment from Schneider Electric and other electrical vendors such as electrical controls equipment from photoelectric sensors, programmable controllers, ac drives, circuit breakers and safety equipment. All these devices are hooked up using various network technologies to allow for a true hands-on experience. Representatives from Schneider Electric (also known as Square D) will be on hand to assist with demonstration and will take part in the classroom presentation.
Schneider Electric is one of the largest electrical distribution and control manufacturers in the world and employs over 1,500 staff in the Nashville area.
SAVY 2009 began Feb. 7 and takes place every Saturday through March 14. Other courses open for media coverage include “Water Water Everywhere!” for kindergartners, “Budding Botanists” for grades 1 and 2, and “Abracadabra Algebra” for grades 3 and 4. SAVY is part of Vanderbilt Programs for Talented Youth, which has been serving the needs of highly gifted 8th-12th grade students from across the nation and abroad since 2000. Saturday Academy at Vanderbilt for the Young (SAVY) was launched in the spring of 2008 and provides accelerated academic experiences for students in grades K-6.
