Deborah Loewenberg Ball, Dean of the School of Education and William H. Payne Collegiate Professor at the University of Michigan, spoke at Vanderbilt’s Peabody College of Education and Human Development Sept. 11. Her presentation focused on the need for more practical classroom experience in the curriculum of collegiate education programs across the country. Ball cited medical training programs for doctors and nurses as examples of what teacher education should emulate.
Ball’s research focuses on mathematics instruction, and on interventions designed to improve its quality and effectiveness. She is also an expert on teacher education, with a particular interest in how professional training and experience combine to equip teachers with the skills and knowledge needed for effective practice.
