MEDIA ADVISORY: Tennessee’s top middle schoolers to converge at Vanderbilt May 19

Nearly 600 of Tennessee’s top middle school students and their families will converge on the Vanderbilt campus Saturday, May 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to be recognized for their academic aptitude and to learn about college life.

The students were identified by the Duke Talent Identification Program, a non-profit educational foundation that sponsors summer residential programs for students in grades 7 through 12. The 7th and 8th graders being recognized May 19 scored at least 510 on the math and critical reading portions of the SAT, or at least 20 on math and English portions and at least 21 on the reading and science sections of the ACT.

The Vanderbilt Programs for Talented Youth hosts the Vanderbilt Summer Academy for talented 8th through 12th graders from across the nation who were identified by the Duke TIP or achieved the requisite scores on the SAT or ACT. The first of the three Vanderbilt Summer Academy sessions begins June 10. Spots are still available in the third session, which begins July 8. For more information, visit http://pty.vanderbilt.edu.

WHAT: Talent Identification Program recognition event for gifted 7th and 8th graders

WHO: Nearly 600 of Tennessee’s top middle schoolers and their parents; Vanderbilt Chancellor Gordon Gee; Vanderbilt Peabody College of Education and Human Development Dean Camilla Benbow; and Vanderbilt Dean of Admissions Douglas Christiansen.

WHEN: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Saturday, May 19: Information fair

1 – 3 p.m., Saturday May 19: Recognition ceremony. Each student will be presented with a Vanderbilt medal from Chancellor Gee as well recognition from the Duke TIP by Dean Christiansen.

WHERE: Curry Field in front of Wilson Hall on the Vanderbilt campus. Wilson Hall is located at 111 21st Ave. South.
