School in the summer might not sound good to most kids, but what if that school is one of the nation’s top universities, the classes explorations of cutting-edge science, art, law, music and more, and the students some of the brightest around? Summer school suddenly sounds a lot better.
The Vanderbilt Summer Academy, part of the university’s Programs for Talented Youth, is currently accepting applications from highly gifted youth for its three residential 2007 summer programs.
“VSA gives highly gifted students a chance to soar in a true community of peers,” Programs for Talented Youth Director Elizabeth Schoenfeld said. “They will have the chance to explore college-level material in math, science and the humanities, interact with university researchers and make lifelong friends, all while having a lot of fun.”
The diverse courses offered by VSA allow students to undertake a detailed, intensive exploration of their topics of interest, ranging from “Music of the Movement: From American Civil Rights to Hip-Hop,” “Environmental Philosophy,” the astronomy-focused “Eyes on the Skies,” “Biomedical Engineering,” “Law, War, and Terror,” “Dead Men’s Tales: Forensic Anthropology” and much more.
The program offers three sessions during which all students will stay on the Vanderbilt campus. Session 1 takes place from Saturday, June 10 through Saturday, June 16 for rising 8th and 9th graders. Tuition is $950. Session 2, Sunday June 17 through Saturday, June 30, is for rising 8th through 10th graders. Tuition is $1,900. Session 3, Sunday July 8 through Saturday, July 28 is for rising 9th through 12th graders. Tuition is $2,750.
Financial aid is available for students with demonstrated need. Children of full-time Vanderbilt employees qualify for a 20 percent discount.
The application deadline is May 16, 2007. Qualified applicants must have taken the SAT or ACT test. More information about admissions criteria is available at http://pty.vanderbilt.edu/scores.html.
