Vanderbilt one of the best places to work in the country, according to life scientists

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt University ranks fifth among the “Best Places to Work in Academia,” according to a survey of researchers in the life sciences that will be released Nov. 7 in The Scientist magazine.

The ranking was based on the responses of 2,600 subscribers to a survey the magazine sent out that rated issues such as relationships with peers, sense of accomplishment in their work and access to research resources as the ingredients that make for a great workplace. The survey evaluated a total of 91 U.S. and 44 non-U.S. research institutions.

“What makes the results of this survey so valuable is that professionals are providing unfiltered insight into their workplace,” said Richard Gallagher, publisher of The Scientist, a magazine for life science researchers.

Among the U.S. institutions, Clemson University in South Carolina ranked first; The Trudeau Institute in New York placed second; The J. Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco came in third; and fourth place went to the University of Florida, Gainesville. Other well-known universities that placed in the top 15 included the University of Wisconsin – Madison, Wake Forest University in North Carolina, Cornell University in New York, the University of Delaware, the University of California, San Francisco and Purdue University in Indiana.

The Scientist, now in its 20th year, is printed bi-weekly and provides information on research, technology, careers and business in the life sciences. It is available online at http://www.the-scientist.com/.
