Owen School to offer master‘s degree in finance, Application deadline is March 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management
will expand its degree offerings to include a master‘s degree in
finance beginning this fall.

The nine-month program in quantitative financial analysis is
intended for recent graduates of an accredited undergraduate program in
a technical or analytical field such as economics, accounting,
statistics, business, mathematics, physics or engineering, or young
professionals already employed in the finance sector.

The application deadline for the Class of 2006 is March 1. Classes
will run from August to May. Tuition for the program is estimated to be
about $32,000.

The program is designed to prepare candidates for employment in a
range of positions across the financial sector from financial analysis
and risk management to corporate control, simulation modeling
and asset allocation. The emphasis on finance and markets will
produce graduates ready for a career in corporate or investment banks,
brokerage firms, venture capital operations, merger and acquisition
specialty firms and central banks or government organizations.

Professor of Management Clifford Ball, faculty director for the new
master‘s program, said, “The investment and banking sectors put a very
high value on expertise in quantitative finance. The Owen School has
designed a flexible modular program that allows students to take a
broad variety of advanced finance classes in a short time.

“The intensity and brevity of the nine-month program is quite a plus
for students, and the recognized strength of the finance faculty at
Owen guarantees a well-respected degree,” Ball continued, noting the
Owen School‘s finance program was singled out last month in the ranking
of business schools by the prestigious Financial Times. “Graduates from
this program will be highly competitive in the marketplace.”

The master‘s in finance differs from an MBA, Ball said, in that the
Vanderbilt MBA is a full-time two-year program that offers a broader
business education and requires more work experience before applicants
may be enrolled. Graduates of the new master‘s program in finance may
elect later to apply to the university for an MBA, with some of the
credits earned counting toward the Vanderbilt MBA if the student is
accepted.

Applicants will be required to submit an application and essay;
provide letters of recommendation, a transcript and resume; and submit
a GMAT or GRE score. Admissions interviews also will be required.
Applicants should have a strong academic record and possess particular
strength in mathematics or a strong level of quantitative training.
