Vanderbilt mentoring program helps Nashville high school students prepare for college

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Nashville-area high school students interested in
attending college are invited to learn more about a free mentoring
program Saturday, Jan. 22, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First Corinthian
Church in Nashville.

The program, SYNERGY, pairs Nashville teens with Vanderbilt
University student mentors who will provide guidance on applying to
college, taking the SAT and identifying areas of interest. Students
will also have the opportunity to meet with admissions officers from
local colleges.

“We are helping with the entire application process as well as
choosing a college and preparing for it,” said SYNERGY coordinator
Stacy Tolos. “Mentors will also work with the students to nurture their
strengths. Emphasizing an individual‘s gifts and talents is believed to
prevent against difficult situations that may otherwise cause problems
later in life.”

SYNERGY is administered by the Community Outreach Partnership
Center, a partnership between Vanderbilt and the Tomorrow‘s Hope,
Hadley Park and Preston-Taylor/Hope 6 neighborhoods. The partnership is
funded by a grant from the federal Department of Housing and Urban
Development.

SYNERGY is open to high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors
interested in attending college and their parents or guardians. The
Jan. 22 kickoff event will begin with a pancake breakfast followed by
an information session about the program and college in general. As a
bonus for joining the program, participants will have the opportunity
to receive free tickets to Vanderbilt men‘s and women‘s basketball
games and tickets to Vanderbilt Theatre performances.
