Tennessee may become second state in periodic table

The provisional name for the newly discovered superheavy element 117 is “tennessine.” The name was chosen by Vanderbilt nuclear physicist Joseph Hamilton to honor the state where three members of the international collaboration that made the discovery are located.

A new website has been launched for SkyVU, the cloud-based system that will replace current e-business services and provide a modern, synchronized environment to allow university faculty and staff to spend less time on paperwork and more time on efforts that contribute to the university’s mission.


 
 

Portions of 24th Avenue South, Garland Avenue to close beginning June 11

A project to install chilled water lines from Vanderbilt’s Power Plant to the new Engineering and Science Building and Olin Hall continues, closing parts of 24th Avenue South as well as Garland Avenue for several weeks this summer.


 
 

Nashville Farmers’ Market at VUMC opens TODAY

After an unexpected delay of its scheduled launch on June 2, the 2016 Nashville Farmers’ Market at Vanderbilt University Medical Center will open this Thursday, June 9. Visit the market on Thursdays from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Medical Center plaza near Eskind Library.

Electric eels make leaping attacks

Vanderbilt biologist Kenneth Catania has accidentally discovered that electric eels can make leaping attacks that dramatically increase the strength of the electric shocks they deliver. In doing so, Catania has confirmed a 200-year-old observation by famous 19th-century explorer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt.
