A performance about being black and gay in the Deep South; a lecture on social justice, mathematics and society; and a conversation with the self-proclaimed “Angry Asian Man” are just a few of the highlights of the 2016-17 Dean’s Diversity Lecture series presented by Vanderbilt’s Peabody College of education and human development.
Five speakers are scheduled for public presentations in the coming weeks. The series is a forum designed to host frank and open discussions about race, diversity and inclusion.
“Peabody College strives to be a community wherein people of all backgrounds can feel both welcomed and intellectually engaged,” said Camilla P. Benbow, Patricia and Rodes Hart Dean of Education and Human Development. “We are proud to offer these lectures, performances and workshops as part of our commitment to making Vanderbilt more equitable, diverse and inclusive.”
All events will take place in the Rotunda of the Wyatt Center, 1930 South Drive, Nashville, Tennessee, 37203.The talks are free and open to the public, but space is limited.

Shaun R. Harper, University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education, a lecture on race and equity in education. Sept. 15, 2016, 4 p.m.
Rochelle Gutiérrez, University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign, a lecture on social justice, mathematics and society.

E. Patrick Johnson, Northwestern University, a performance of the one-man show “Pouring Tea: Black Gay Men of the South Tell Their Tales.”
Jan. 24, 2017, 7 p.m.
Laura Rendon, University of Texas at San Antonio, a workshop on college preparation and success.
Feb. 2, 2017, at 1 p.m.
Phil Yu, blogger and editor of “The Angry Asian Man,” a conversation about the blog and its objectives.
