The Vanderbilt Neuroendocrine Center is hosting talks by renowned endocrine tumor expert Kjell Oberg of Uppsala University Hospital in Sweden, Oct. 17-19 on the Vanderbilt University Medical Center campus.
Oberg, chairman of the Centre of Excellence for Endocrine Tumors, is widely accepted as an authority on endocrine tumors, having pioneered the treatment of carcinoid tumors with interferon and somatostatin analogues. He is one of the founders of the European Neuroendocrine Tumor Network (ENET).
In 2010, Eric Liu, director of the Vanderbilt Neuroendocrine Center, studied with Oberg in Sweden prior to opening the Vanderbilt center. Oberg will be appointed an adjunct professor of Surgery at Vanderbilt on Oct. 17.
“Professor Oberg is a great friend and tremendous resource to Vanderbilt,” said Liu, assistant professor of Surgery in the division of Surgical Oncology & Endocrine Surgery. “His lectures will bring decades of experience and a view of the cutting edge treatments for neuroendocrine cancer,” he said.
Oberg will make the following presentations:
- Oct. 17 – “Development of new treatment modalities – oncolytic viruses and nano technique,” Surgical Research Collaborative Conference Series, 5 p.m., University Club
- Oct. 18 – “New biochemical markers for NET – an unmet need,” Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center Special Lecture, GI SPORE, Noon, 898-J Preston Research Building, 8th floor.
- Oct. 19 – “Advances in diagnosis and treatment of GI-NET,” Endocrine Grand Rounds, 8 a.m., Light Hall 512.
The Vanderbilt Neuroendocrine Center is a collaboration between the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and the Vanderbilt Digestive Disease Center. In 2010, Vanderbilt became the first facility in the U.S. to use a specialized PET/CT scan to locate often difficult to detect neuroendocrine tumors.
The Center takes a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care drawing from Vanderbilt’s expertise in surgical oncology, surgical sciences, imaging services and radiology. They offer neuroendocrine patients a comprehensive range of therapeutic treatments, including targeted chemotherapy, surgery and nutrition management.
