Jun. 30, 2016—Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos today announced that the university will raise its starting wage to $12.50 an hour and will increase its PTO plan for qualified employees, including adding the day after Thanksgiving and more than a weeklong winter break as holidays.
Jun. 13, 2016—The first study to systematically measure the number of neurons in the brains of birds has found that they have significantly more neurons packed into their small brains than are stuffed into mammalian and even primate brains of the same mass.
Jun. 6, 2016—Vanderbilt biologist Kenneth Catania has accidentally discovered that electric eels can make leaping attacks that dramatically increase the strength of the electric shocks they deliver. In doing so, Catania has confirmed a 200-year-old observation by famous 19th-century explorer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt.
Jun. 6, 2016—The Vanderbilt University community is mourning the death of Donny Everett, a rising sophomore and pitcher on the Commodore baseball team, following a drowning accident June 2 in Coffee County, Tennessee. Funeral services for Everett are scheduled for Tuesday in Clarksville, Tennessee.
Jun. 2, 2016—Thirteen interdisciplinary projects, ranging from cellular processes and smart cities to global health care issues, have been selected as the 2016 awardees of the Trans-Institutional Program (TIPs) initiative.
May. 24, 2016—Vanderbilt University has hired Stephanie White as head women's basketball coach, Athletic Director David Williams announced Tuesday. White, who currently is serving her second season as head coach of the WNBA's Indiana Fever, becomes just the fifth all-time head coach in the history of the Vanderbilt program.
May. 13, 2016—Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos mined his family's history to make his point to the Class of 2016 at Commencement ceremonies.
Apr. 29, 2016—Effective April 30, Vanderbilt University Medical Center will be a fully independent, nonprofit entity following the completion of the transaction that separated it legally and financially from Vanderbilt University. The transition positions VUMC for future growth and investment, while preserving its tightly woven connections to the university in research and teaching.
Apr. 22, 2016—Vanderbilt University's first-ever Giving Day has raised more than $1.3 million and secured $200,000 in challenge gifts to Opportunity Vanderbilt—the university’s initiative to replace all need-based undergraduate student loans with scholarships and grant assistance.
Apr. 6, 2016—Vanderbilt University has hired Bryce Drew as head men’s basketball coach, Athletic Director David Williams announced on Wednesday. Drew becomes the ninth Commodore basketball coach of the modern era and 27th all time.
Mar. 31, 2016—Vanderbilt University will take the next step in extending students’ living experience beyond the classroom and enhancing student engagement and community on campus when it begins construction in mid-May on the new Vanderbilt Barnard residential college.
