May. 3, 2018—The 2018 Shade Tree Trot, which took place April 21, was a great success, raising $98,000, in combination with funds from the Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction, to support the medical student-run Shade Tree Clinic, which provides care to the underserved population of Nashville.
Apr. 19, 2018—Two Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM) students were recently chosen by the Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE) to participate in a two-week program in Germany and Poland that uses the conduct of physicians in Nazi-occupied Europe as a way to reflect on medical ethics today.
Mar. 22, 2018—Fourth-year medical students Katie DesPrez and Joe Wick met at orientation during their first year at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Mar. 15, 2018—The Vanderbilt University School of Medicine student-run Shade Tree Clinic was founded in 2004 as a means to provide primary care to Nashville’s uninsured population and to allow medical and nursing students to receive valuable hands-on training while providing healthcare to those in need.
Mar. 8, 2018—Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, Meharry Medical College and Tennessee State University Cancer Partnership recently hosted the 2018 annual retreat and poster contest, “Health Disparities in Cancer Immunology & Immune Therapy.”
Oct. 5, 2017—Aspiring medical students Lauren Holroyd and Julian Genkins took a break from academics after earning their undergraduate degrees and went to work for the health care software company Epic, based in Verona, Wisconsin. Although they did not know each other at the time, they would both end up at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM) where they would put their Epic expertise to work.
Aug. 3, 2017—As family members, friends and faculty gathered in 208 Light Hall, many with cell phones positioned to capture the moment, Bonnie Miller, M.D., MMHC, welcomed them to the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine’s (VUSM) annual Convocation and White Coat Ceremony, and then turned to the first-year students and asked a simple question.
Jul. 27, 2017—As a teenager, Ashley Duhon realized she wanted to become a doctor so she could help people, like her mother, who suffer from medical complications due to type 1 diabetes.
Jun. 29, 2017—Joey Barnett, Ph.D., professor of Pharmacology at Vanderbilt and director of the Office of Medical Student Research, has received the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Louis B. Russell Jr. Memorial Award for his efforts as an advocate for the career advancement of minority students and trainees in cardiovascular science, and for increased representation of underserved communities among the AHA volunteer base.

Mar. 23, 2017—inseparable study buddies and then best friends. They started dating at the end of the first year and got married in June 2016. On March 17, the couple stood side by side as they opened their Match Day envelopes that revealed the locations of their residencies…and their future.
