Kelly Slay’s research on affirmative action: Informed by the past, informing the future
 
The U.S. Supreme Court will again review the constitutionality of affirmative action Oct. 31 when it hears the cases of Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. Presidents and Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. University of North Carolina. Assistant Professor of Higher Education and Public Policy Kelly Slay will join many of her colleagues in Washington, D.C., to engage in rallies related to these cases.

Joanne W. Golann, assistant professor of public policy and education, has received a grant from the National Science Foundation for a project that aims to improve early parenting support programs by helping them address the needs of diverse and low-income families.

Three fundraising professionals promoted to new leadership positions in Development and Alumni Relations
 
Development and Alumni Relations recently promoted three longtime fundraising professionals into leadership roles in anticipation of the public phase of the university’s ongoing philanthropic campaign. Scotty Mann, Jonathan Petty and Taylor Wood have been named assistant vice chancellors of development; each will have oversight of specific fundraising responsibilities.

Vanderbilt’s Government and Community Relations will partner with One Generation Away and Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee to host a drive-thru mobile food pantry on the university’s campus on Saturday, Oct. 29. Vanderbilt faculty, staff and students are invited to volunteer at the event beginning at 7:30 a.m.

All undergraduate students are invited to attend the annual Nichols Humanitarian Fund reception and open house on Tuesday, Nov. 1, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Student Life Center Board of Trust Room. The fund will begin accepting applications for support of students who plan to pursue humanitarian immersive experiences during summer 2023 on Nov. 2.

Voting policy for VU employees; TN early voting period is Oct. 19–Nov. 3
 
During early voting for the 2022 midterm elections or on Election Day, Vanderbilt University employees who are registered to vote may be absent from work for a reasonable paid period of time, not to exceed three hours. Tennessee’s early voting period is Oct. 19–Nov. 3. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
