Vanderbilt was created in the wake of the Civil War to help heal the wounds of a divided nation—in the words of Cornelius Vanderbilt, to “contribute to strengthening the ties which should exist between all sections of our common country.”
Now, as then, dialogue and collaboration are our guiding principles. This issue’s cover story on the transformative success of Dialogue Vanderbilt signals something essential: Education is not just the transmission of knowledge, but the cultivation of powerful lifelong skills. In an era that too often rewards reaction over reflection, our students learn to listen, question and engage across complexity with courage and respect.
That same commitment shapes our approach to discovery. Whether confronting the moral dimensions of artificial intelligence, strengthening democratic institutions, advancing medical innovation or expanding the frontiers of the arts, Vanderbilt builds bridges—between engineering and the humanities, between data science and public policy. But building bridges requires a culture of radical collaboration based on trust, mutual respect and a shared dedication to excellence.
That spirit of collaboration extends across the life of our university. Our student-athletes demonstrate each day what dedicated teamwork and shared ambition can achieve. The recent gains and rapid growth of our athletic programs are about more than competitive excellence—they’re about the supportive culture of our community and the forward momentum of this time in our history.
We also see that momentum in our growth beyond Nashville. With the launch of Vanderbilt University–New York City and our campuses planned in San Francisco and West Palm Beach, we are extending our presence into global centers of innovation and creativity. These initiatives reflect a simple conviction: A great university in this century must not be bound by geography. We go wherever discovery unfolds—and where our commitment to positive change will bring greater impact. By connecting our Nashville home to dynamic ecosystems nationwide, we build new opportunities for our students, faculty and alumni while staying grounded in the values that define us.
Throughout this issue, you will find these values in action. These stories show a university that is proud but not satisfied. A university that embraces change and also insists on honoring time-tested principles. A university that prepares graduates to not only succeed in their fields, but to strengthen the communities they serve.
Thank you for being Vanderbilt’s ambassadors in your own communities, wherever they are in the world—and for upholding our values as you embrace the future in your own lives. I look forward to connecting and collaborating with you in even more new ways in the season to come.
