Respecting and supporting religious observances at Vanderbilt

As the new academic year begins, many around campus are finding a rhythm for balancing classes, campus activities and community life. For many, this season also holds meaningful moments of faith and tradition. In the weeks and months ahead, many religious and spiritual communities at Vanderbilt will observe significant holy days.

To help the community prepare and support one another, Student Affairs put together a Vanderbilt Holy Days Calendar. The calendar has a comprehensive list of major observances throughout the year and includes recommended accommodations for people participating. This resource can be especially helpful when planning coursework, events and work schedules.

Everyone is encouraged to review the calendar early and plan accordingly. Students should be proactive and consider upcoming observances when mapping out their semester and, if accommodations are needed, submit written requests to instructors in advance. Faculty and staff, in turn, can work to be mindful of holy days when scheduling classes, events or deadlines to help avoid conflicts and help everyone participate. If you have questions about academic accommodations related to religious beliefs, the Equal Opportunity and Access office can assist. The Center for Spiritual and Religious Life  also offers guidance, resources and opportunities for connection.

Honoring religious and spiritual traditions is part of Vanderbilt’s broader commitment to creating a welcoming, respectful campus environment where every student can thrive.
