Vanderbilt University statement on football fan celebration

After the historic football win against Alabama on October 5, the student and fan celebration that left Vanderbilt’s campus onto city streets required spur of the moment resources from the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) and other city services to ensure safety, particularly in the congested downtown area.

Vanderbilt is deeply grateful to the MNPD, the Nashville Fire Department and the city’s Office of Emergency Management for acting swiftly to provide a safe environment for both those celebrating and those along the path of the celebration. We are thankful that no one was seriously hurt.

University officials have since met with MNPD to discuss safety concerns. We are partnering to develop and implement strategies to prevent any future off-campus disruptions. The university has also offered to reimburse the city for the expenses related to the additional resources that had to be deployed following the game.
