All faculty affiliated with Vanderbilt, including those who work at VUMC, are invited to the Faculty Senate meetings throughout the school year. Meetings take place on Thursdays from 4:10 to 5:30 p.m. in the Faculty Commons, located at 1101 19th Avenue. Chancellor Daniel Diermeier and Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs C. Cybele Raver attend almost all meetings and speak with the faculty.
“Faculty involvement is an essential component in Vanderbilt’s governance, and I would encourage every faculty member to attend Faculty Senate meetings if they are interested in shared governance and learning about the workings of Vanderbilt,” said Faculty Senate Chair Alissa Hare, assistant dean of the College of Arts & Science and senior lecturer in chemistry. “I started out attending Faculty Senate meetings, then had the opportunity to serve on the Student Life Committee as a guest of the senate before being elected as a senator for the College of Arts and Science. Participation in the Faculty Senate is an excellent opportunity to be more informed and involved with the remarkable people and projects going on at Vanderbilt.”
The dates for this year’s meetings are:
- August 29 (full meeting) Reception following
- September 12 (senators only)
- October 17 (full meeting)
- November 7 (full meeting)
- December 5 (senators only)
- January 9 (full meeting)
- February 6 (voting members only)
- March 6 (full meeting)

“Participating in Faculty Senate meetings provides an opportunity to make our voices as faculty heard and hear the voices of other campus stakeholders. Faculty participation in shared governance ensures there’s a diverse set of perspectives used to guide Vanderbilt’s mission,” Vice Chair Peter Kolkay, associate professor of bassoon, said.
