Vanderbilt University Government Relations is hosting a student advocacy workshop on Thursday, April 4, 2:30–4 p.m. in the Kissam Multipurpose Room. The workshop will be an interactive working session about advocacy best practices to help equip students with practical skills they can use to advocate effectively for their interests.

During the workshop, students will engage in real-life scenarios related to policy issues they care about through interactive advocacy role-play with hands-on guidance from the senior leadership team for Vanderbilt Government Relations. Students will gain insights into key aspects of effective advocacy, such as knowing the ask, crafting the message and clearly defining a point of view. The event will conclude with a Q&A session to allow students to connect with members of the Government Relations team at the federal, state and local levels.
“First as a curious and conversational student, and later through involvement in Student Government and the Open Dialogue program, it has been abundantly clear that Vanderbilt students are passionate about politics, have incredible visions for the future, yet often don’t know how to harness their passions into the change we wish to see,” said Ari Sasson, a senior majoring in Law, History and Society and Economics. Sasson was a student worker in GCR in the fall 2023 semester and helped develop the advocacy guide. “It is incredible to see that Vanderbilt is taking steps to improve students’ political advocacy skills. I look forward to seeing my fellow Commodores creating effective political change on issues important to them.”
Student advocacy guide launched
In another effort to empower students to engage and advocate for the issues they care most about, Vanderbilt has introduced a comprehensive guide called “How to Be an Engaged Citizen.” This online advocacy guide provides detailed steps for students who want to influence public policies at local, state and federal levels.
In addition to offering practical advice on voting and engaging with elected officials, the guide answers common questions for students, such as “Who represents me?”, “How do I track legislation?” and “What does an effective advocacy strategy look like?”
This resource is a comprehensive tool that provides information on contacting federal, state and local policymakers, along with insights into legislative processes. By addressing these key questions, the guide empowers students with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate the complex landscape of civic engagement effectively.

All students are encouraged to explore the guide, register for the workshop and take another step toward becoming engaged citizens ready to make a positive impact on the issues that matter most to them.
