Dialogue Vanderbilt Public Debate Series unveils lineup with U.S. Air Force Academy and weekend tournament

The Dialogue Vanderbilt Public Debate Series is scheduled to kick off with a public debate on Friday, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m. The debate tournament will follow on Saturday and Sunday. 

The public debate will be with the U.S. Air Force Academy in Vanderbilt’s Wilson Hall, Room 103. The debate tournament, comprising four rounds on Saturday and four on Sunday, will be open to the Vanderbilt community. Attendees should check in on the first floor of Buttrick Hall before watching the debates on Saturday and Sunday. Parking is available in lots 5a and 5b. 

The Feb. 2 public debate with the U.S. Air Force Academy will center around the crucial question of whether the United States should increase its regulation of artificial intelligence. For the debate rounds on Feb. 3 and 4, topics will be announced 15 minutes before the start of each round. 

 The tournament boasts an impressive lineup of participating schools, including Duke University, Northwestern University, the U.S. Air Force Academy, Bard College, University of Miami, Notre Dame, University of Mississippi, Loyola University Chicago, Seattle University, Willamette University, Regis University and the University of Denver. 

Vanderbilt has a rich tradition of debate and has hosted annual debate tournaments for decades—including virtual ones during the pandemic. All members of Vanderbilt Debate play integral roles in the success of the tournament; they debate, they judge and they assist with hospitality. The tournament brings 150 to 200 debaters and coaches from across the country, so every team member is needed to ensure the event’s success.
