Winter weather operations update: In-person classes canceled Jan. 16, administrative leave day declared

UPDATED TUESDAY, JAN. 16, 6:30 P.M.

Vanderbilt University will be open with normal class schedules Wednesday, Jan. 17. Please be cautious as you navigate campus and the surrounding area. Faculty, staff and students living off campus are encouraged to evaluate road conditions along their commute and to use discretion in choosing whether to travel to campus. Personal safety is the first priority.

POSTED MONDAY, JAN. 15, 7 P.M.

As we continue to experience extreme cold weather and snow accumulation in Nashville, the university is sharing updates about its campus operations.

  • All in-person classes scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 16 have been canceled and will not be held. Chancellor Daniel Diermeier has declared an administrative leave day.
  • If you are scheduled to be an instructor or are a student in an online course or at a clinical placement site on Tuesday, please look for your dean’s announcement regarding plans.
  • Staff who have on-site job functions should make plans, in collaboration with their managers, to report to work if they are safely able to do so. Staff who do not have on-site job assignments need not report to campus. In all cases, if staff have questions about their work location or expectations, they should contact their supervisor. (Staff covered by a collective bargaining agreement are subject to established departmental policies regarding attendance.)
  • The Acorn School will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
  • Facilities staff continue to work on removing snow from around campus and apply salt on pathways. Major campus pathways are walkable, but snow has continued to accumulate throughout the day today. Please be cautious as you navigate campus and the surrounding area.
  • Information about campus services, including Campus Dining and Vandy Rides, can be found in this message from Student Affairs that was distributed to students earlier today.
  • All classes will be conducted on their normal schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
  • If weather conditions necessitate the delay or cancelation of classes after Tuesday, updates will be shared with the campus community in text, email and phone messages and will be posted to the Vanderbilt homepage and the university’s Facebook, X and Instagram accounts. Updates also will be shared on the MyVU news website.

Enjoy the snow and stay safe!
