The Vanderbilt Child and Family Center’s Owls kindergarten program is enrolling students for the 2023–24 school year.
This unique kindergarten on the Vanderbilt campus follows a nature-based educational philosophy and offers an emergent curriculum with a learning focus on 21st-century skills, including creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking. Licensed by the State of Tennessee Department of Education, children must turn 5 years of age by August 2023 to enroll.
Early literacy provides abundant opportunities for young learners to speak, listen, read and write by playfully working individually, in small groups and as a community. In addition to the joy of these activities, students perceive reading as a tool for research and writing as a tool for documentation.
Whole body learning supports all children to be successful learners. Too often young children are constrained by furniture when their bodies need to move. This can create undesirable behaviors and classroom management problems. By creating a learning environment that invites movement, the community becomes pro-social and collaborative and more children can directly engage in academic content successfully.
An online parent information session will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 31, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Contact kathleen.c.seabolt@vanderbilt.edu for the Zoom link.
