The Student Center for Social Justice and Identity (SCSJI) invites all students to attend its inaugural Empowerment Summit on Sunday, March 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Student Life Center. The conference aims to foster critical dialogue for student leaders surrounding a social justice topic.
For the inaugural summit, SCSJI will partner with Hidden Dores and the Vanderbilt chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to focus on how student activists engage in advocacy and social justice work while centering their self-care. This year’s summit, with the theme “Create, Act, Rest and Empower (C.A.R.E.),” will feature actor and activist Kendrick Sampson for a keynote address as well as several rounds of interactive sessions to educate participants on the importance of community activism and holistic wellness.
Sampson hails from the suburbs of Houston, Texas, where he was surrounded by musicians and artists and naturally gravitated to the arts. He starred in the 2020 Sundance and SXSW award-winning film Miss Juneteenth directed by Channing Godfrey Peoples. He also starred in the HBO award-winning comedy series Insecure, and has appeared on Greek, CSI, The Vampire Diaries, How to Get Away with Murder, The Flashand others. Offscreen, Sampson uses his voice to empower marginalized communities and to highlight issues of inequity.
A complimentary breakfast and lunch will be available to all participants of the Empowerment Summit, which will end with a networking social.
