Finance Fundamentals continues in 2022 offering finance-related education for faculty

The Division of Finance, in partnership with the Office of Faculty Affairs, is entering its third year offering the faculty educational initiative “Finance Fundamentals.” The series provides opportunities for faculty to learn about and discuss financial and administrative tools and resources useful in navigating policies, processes and procedures that support operations and research at Vanderbilt.

The first session of the new year will be on Wednesday, Jan. 19, from 3 to 4 p.m. via Microsoft Teams. All faculty are welcome and encouraged to attend. The session will cover employment law, hiring and supervising student and staff personnel, and immigration services.

The initiative aligns closely with Faculty Affairs’ ongoing faculty development efforts to bring educational opportunities to faculty each semester.

“As we continue to provide all faculty with the resources they need to continue their success, these sessions create an opportunity to collaborate with campus stakeholders and positively impact faculty leaders,” said Tracey George, vice provost for faculty affairs. “Finance is a logical partner, as many of our faculty leaders are engaged with Finance-related policies and procedures, and these sessions nicely supplement those efforts”

George said she has personally gained much from participating in the sessions.

“The program is designed to provide faculty an overview of Finance roles and responsibilities in support of the academic, research and service mission of Vanderbilt,” Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance Eric Bymaster, who developed the program with his team, said. “The interactive sessions highlight ways academic faculty and Finance staff can partner to advance faculty research and scholarship through streamlined operations while fulfilling important compliance requirements.”

While the initiative is entering its third year, prior Finance Fundamental sessions were recorded, saved and are available to those who are interested. Access to these sessions is available via Box upon request.

Academic faculty interested in attending future sessions should contact Kaitlyn O’Rourke, senior administrative coordinator for Finance, at kaitlyn.n.orourke@vanderbilt.edu. Information and registration links for future sessions can be found on the Office of Faculty Affairs website.
