Military veterans on campus will be celebrated at a breakfast reception on Thursday, Nov. 11, one of several ways Vanderbilt University will commemorate Veterans Day 2021. The event will be from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the Kissam Center, Room C210. Those who wish to attend the breakfast should email barton.t.christmas@vanderbilt.edu to RSVP.
“Veterans Day is a time to honor the many Vanderbilt students, alumni, faculty and staff members who have served our country, and whose fortitude and service strengthen our One Vanderbilt community every day,” Chancellor Daniel Diermeier said. “Our veterans exemplify the qualities that set Vanderbilt apart—including leadership, collaboration and commitment to a common purpose.”
For a second year, Vanderbilt’s Army and Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps programs and the Bass Military Scholars Program have commissioned an updated “Vandy Vets” logo that was made into a lapel pin and will be distributed to university students, faculty and staff who are veterans as well as to alumni. Veterans will receive the pin at the Nov. 11 breakfast event. Those unable to attend the breakfast may contact robert.b.hulette@vanderbilt.edu for a pin. Vanderbilt University Medical Center students, faculty and staff veterans may contact catherine.s.wilson@vumc.org.
The logo also appears in two virtual backgrounds available for download and use on Zoom to show users’ status as veterans or their support for veterans on campus.
Veterans are encouraged to wear their lapel pins at the annual Salute to Service football game on Saturday, Nov. 13, when the Commodores take on the Kentucky Wildcats at Vanderbilt Stadium beginning at 6 p.m. Veterans will be recognized and honored during the game.
In addition, campus veterans, active military faculty, staff and postdoctoral scholars and affiliated community members are invited to a post-Veterans Day lunch event on Wednesday, Nov. 17. Veterans and military community members are encouraged to stop by the first-floor lounge in Alumni Hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a free boxed lunch. The event is sponsored by the Veterans and Military Employee Affinity Group, whose aim is to provide support, share information and build a more connected network of veterans and military members at Vanderbilt. Please RSVP in advance to reserve a boxed lunch.
