VUPD issues scam warning involving smart phone cash apps

Vanderbilt University Public Safety is warning the Vanderbilt community of a recent scam involving smart phone cash apps.

The suspect has approached persons in the area and asked to use their cell phones to call for a ride. After a minute or two of apparent texting, the suspect returned the phone to the owner and went on their way. Later, the victims have discovered that the suspect has used the Venmo payment and wallet app to transfer hundreds of dollars out of the victims’ accounts.

The VUPS Criminal Investigations Unit is working with local law enforcement partners to identify the scammer.
