New Multicultural Community Space to open on campus this fall

A new community space for multicultural student organizations and their leaders to gather will open on campus this fall, the Office of the Dean of Students and the Student Center for Social Justice and Identity have announced. The Multicultural Community Space also will serve as an additional location for events, programming and storage for these groups.

The Multicultural Community Space will be located at 200C 25th Ave. S. in the West End Neighborhood.

“The new Multicultural Community Space will bring students and cultural groups together to collaborate, dialogue and exchange ideas that affirm and celebrate the various multicultural identities represented on our campus,” said G.L. Black, associate provost and dean of students. “It will further support our mission to foster the social networks and vital experiences through which our students develop as intentional learners and global citizens.”

Student leaders and organizations that are coached by the SCSJI and are a part of the Multicultural Leadership Council will be able to reserve the space, with the hope that cultural groups will make the MCS their own and cultivate community.

The MCS will feature a meeting room that can be used for lounge space or reserved for group meetings, presentations and more. In addition, the space has a full kitchen and can accommodate rehearsals, banquets and event after parties. The MCS also provides a number of rooms that can serve as storage space for the student organizations affiliated with the SCSJI.

Dean of Students staff will be in contact with student organizations soon to gather feedback on ways the new space may be personalized to make it representative of all the cultural groups it will support. More information related to the reservation and storage application processes will be sent in July.

Student Center for Social Justice and Identity staff will remain in Sarratt 335, and the Multicultural Lounge in Sarratt Student Center also will remain open and fully operational.
