On May 12 the Vanderbilt Divinity School will host the third part of a series exploring the realities of the Asian and Asian American diaspora with a 6 p.m. CT film screening and talkback about the documentary film Far East Deep South.
Register in advance to receive the livestream link.
The film follows the Chiu family on a surprising journey through Mississippi in search of their lost family history. Along the way, they meet a diverse group of local residents and historians who shed light on the racially complex history of the early Chinese in the segregated South.
There will be a discussion and talkback about the film immediately following the screening. The panelists include:
- Baldwin Chiu and Larissa Lam, filmmakers
- Nancy Wang Yuen, moderator
- Ben Tran (Vanderbilt University associate professor of Asian Studies and English) and Min Zhou (Director of UCLA Asia Pacific Center), faculty panelists
The event is hosted by Vanderbilt Divinity School in collaboration with Vanderbilt University Department of Communication Studies, Peabody College of Education and Human Development, the UCLA Rose Bowl Bruin Alumni Network, and the Asian Pacific American UCLA Alumni Network.
Part one of the series explored the intersections of religion and the theme, Asian & Asian American Realities: Racism, Hate, Resilience, and Solidarity. Part two was a teach-in, in the spirit of the efforts across campuses that were organized in the 1960s in response to the Vietnam War draft.
