Vanderbilt’s prohibition of guns on campus will remain in effect following the passage of a new state law, known as the permitless carry law, that allows for both open and concealed carrying of handguns for people 21 and older without a permit as well as for military members ages 18 to 20. Vanderbilt’s government relations team actively engaged with state policymakers to ensure that the university’s current policies regarding firearms were not impacted by this legislation.
The university prohibits anyone other than on-duty police officers from possessing firearms on campus.
The university also does not permit storage of recreational sporting/hunting equipment, such as archery equipment, inside residential facilities on campus. The Vanderbilt University Police Department provides students with a lawful means of storage on campus for firearms and other sporting/hunting equipment.
