The Employee Learning and Engagement team held virtual opening sessions for Vanderbilt Leadership Academy (VLA) and Vanderbilt Leadership Enrichment (VLE) in late February.
VLA is a learning experience that brings together a diverse group of university leaders from both academic and administrative areas to increase their knowledge in leading at Vanderbilt as well as their passion for furthering the institution’s values and mission. The program is designed to sharpen awareness of personal performance as a leader, demonstrating the ability to receive feedback and self-adjust, promote behaviors that reflect learning and leading agility, demonstrate composure and presence both internally and externally, and consider stakeholders’ interests, core values and data in decision-making. The program focuses on helping the participants discover who they are as a leader, how they effectively interact with others, and how they can prepare to lead the organization for the future.
Chancellor Daniel Diermeier and the university’s executive leadership welcomed 24 leaders into the 10th class of VLA during the virtual opening session. The 10th class is comprised of leaders from 21 schools and departments.

VLE is designed to develop key leadership skills and competencies for staff who are managers or operational leaders demonstrating high potential, and whose leadership position is between front-line supervisor and director. This university-wide program consists of multiple sessions, offered temporarily in a virtual setting from March through October. The program aims to help participants enhance their leadership self-awareness and increase their institutional knowledge. VLE will help develop their ability to work effectively with a team, lead during times of change, manage both complex and simple projects, deal with conflict, and set departmental goals and direction.
The virtual opening session of VLE welcomed 22 participants into its second class in partnership with Vice Chancellor for Administration Eric Kopstain, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and the Chief IT Transition Executive Rich Germano and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Information Technology Shanmuga Sundaram. The second VLE class is comprised of staff members from 12 departments and schools.
