Overview
Vanderbilt University may submit one application to the Prevent Cancer Foundation 2021 Community Grants program. The mission of the Prevent Cancer Foundation is saving lives across all populations through cancer prevention and early detection.
The Prevent Cancer Foundation will provide $25,000 one-year grants (no indirect costs allowed) to develop new or implement existing community projects/programs in cancer prevention and early detection in rural or urban areas. The foundation’s goal is to provide the resources needed to fund vital community-level activities in cancer prevention (including education or vaccination) or screening. The proposed projects must be aligned with the foundation’s mission to support community projects or programs across the United States (including tribes and territories) that focus on helping to prevent cancer or find it earlier and that demonstrate a potential to make a positive impact in underserved communities.
2021 focus
The Prevent Cancer Foundation invites applications focused on mandated guidelines-driven cancer screenings (breast, cervical, colorectal or lung), as well as education projects focused on these screenings. Additionally, the foundation invites vaccination applications focused on preventing liver cancer or HPV-related cancers. Applications must focus on underserved communities. Applications focused on rural populations and ones serving LGBTQ+ communities are especially encouraged.
Eligibility
Projects that meet the following criteria will be considered:
- Project must address the 2021 focus area (above.) See specific examples of eligible projects in the grant guidelines.
- Projects must demonstrate at least two community partnerships that support the implementation of the proposed project.
- The inclusion of community participation in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the proposed projects is encouraged.
- Projects should utilize evidence-based practices or best practices to provide cancer prevention or early detection services in their communities. Projects with screening objectives must follow current cancer screening guidelines of the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), the American Cancer Society (ACS) or the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN).
- Screening programs must demonstrate established community partnerships to provide any necessary follow-up care.
- Projects focused on breast health education for young women should include use of the foundation’s Breast Health Education for Young Women Facilitator’s Guide (available in English or Spanish) and must include education about breast cancer screening.
- Applicants must demonstrate how a grant award would provide needed support for vital community-level activities in cancer prevention (including education or vaccination) or screening in underserved communities.
- Applicants must comply with the foundation’s tobacco policy. Applicants (project managers/directors) must confirm that they do not accept tobacco-industry funding.
The following project types are NOT eligible:
- Projects focused on treatment and survivorship
- Projects that include fundraising events
- Projects focused on primary prevention such as tobacco cessation, exercise or nutrition
- Screening projects that do not comply with current screening guidelines from the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), the American Cancer Society (ACS) or the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN)
- For the 2021 grants cycle, screening and testing projects focused on stomach and other cancers without guidelines-mandated screenings are not eligible to apply.
- Projects that promote breast self-exam
- Projects that include the construction of buildings or purchase of land
- Projects that include the purchase of equipment. Cancer screening and testing costs or supplies are allowable and must be justified.

Following the internal competition, the chosen nominee will submit an application to the foundation by April 21.
