Office of Faculty Affairs launches redesigned faculty development webpage; upcoming workshops announced

The Office of Faculty Affairs in the Office of the Provost has redesigned its faculty development webpage to share the full scope of resources available for faculty at Vanderbilt. The redesigned webpage convenes all appropriate resources for faculty in one place, allowing faculty to find the support they need to be successful in their teaching, scholarship and service activities.

The faculty development webpage’s nine primary sections highlight the following:

General faculty development workshops: Throughout the year, the Office of Faculty Affairs offers faculty workshops and programming. These workshops are now separated into three categories:

  • Inclusion, diversity, equity and access
  • Promotion, tenure and other faculty career pathways
  • Scholarship, teaching and service

(A list of upcoming faculty development workshops can be found below.)

Academic leadership development: This program focuses on building strong managerial skills such as financial literacy, mission and vision setting, team building and communication. The academic leadership development initiative is divided into three pathways:

  • Chairing an academic unit
  • Conversations on faculty academic leadership
  • Faculty leadership program

Center for Teaching: This section includes a direct link to the Center for Teaching website for additional resources for faculty teaching.

Faculty awards: This section details both internal and external award opportunities as well as a timeline for awards at Vanderbilt.

Institutional memberships and resources: This section includes online resources that address various topics pertinent to the life cycle and experiences of faculty. These resources and webinars are provided by the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD) and the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC).

Internal funding programs: The university’s internal faculty funding programs are designed to launch or propel discovery, scholarship, works of art and creative expression. Details about the types of internal funding opportunities can be found here.

Faculty search committee resources: These resources were created to provide faculty search committees with support and access to strategies that strengthen the faculty search process and produce a diverse and excellent pool of candidates, with the goal of making an outstanding hire.

Faculty mentoring resources: Faculty mentoring is an important part of the faculty development process, especially as faculty members progress in their careers. This section offers best practices for faculty mentoring and other additional resources.

Faculty mental health/well-being resources: This section contains resources to help faculty recognize their mental health needs and refer themselves and others for further support.

In addition to the webpage redesign, faculty are invited to a series of professional development workshops to be held throughout the spring 2021 semester. Each session will present advice and tools for how to navigate a specific aspect of professional academic life. They are presented by faculty and other senior leaders representing various disciplines.

Please visit the faculty development workshop and academic leadership development pages for workshop descriptions, speaker and panelist information, and to register.
