Dining tents to include sustainability features this spring

Don't Trash It - Compost ItRecycling and food waste collection bins will be added to the dining tents on Peabody Esplanade and Alumni Lawn beginning Feb. 9. Students will be able to place all food scraps, napkins and Campus Dining food packaging in the food waste bins. All to-go containers and utensils distributed by Campus Dining in the dining tents can be composted.

Reduce it, Reuse it, Recycle itThe food waste will then be collected and composted with Vanderbilt’s composting partner, the Compost Company. Recycling bins also will be available for any plastic, aluminum, tin, cardboard, paper or cartons. Signage will be posted at the recycling and food waste bins with instructions regarding what can be collected.

Re-use to Reduce WasteIn addition, in partnership with Students Promoting Environmental Awareness and Responsibility (SPEAR), Campus Dining will provide all undergraduate students with a set of bamboo cutlery that is reusable, 100 percent biodegradable and sustainable. Reusable cutlery can help reduce waste when eating meals on the go. Students can pick up their reusable cutlery kits at tables outside of Rand Hall and The Commons Center on the following days and times:

  • Monday, Feb. 8, 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, Feb. 11, 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
  • Monday, Feb. 15, 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, Feb. 18, 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

If students are unable to pick up their cutlery kit at one of the distribution times, kits also may be picked up from the Munchie Marts after Feb. 18. Students will need to swipe their card to receive a cutlery kit.
