Ruth Shim, the Luke and Grace Kim Professor in Cultural Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California–Davis School of Medicine, will deliver Vanderbilt’s Harold Jordan Lecture Celebrating Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice on Friday, Feb. 5.
Shim will discuss her work in mental health disparities and the social determinants of mental health, which is the topic of her recently published book, Social (In)Justice of Mental Health. The lecture will begin at noon CT and be conducted via Zoom.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences established the Harold Jordan Lecture Celebrating Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice in 2019 to honor Jordan’s contributions to the field of psychiatry, mental health services in the state of Tennessee, and to VUMC’s department as well as neighboring Meharry Medical College.
In 1964, Jordan became the first African American resident at VUMC, where he maintained a clinical appointment until 2016. He went on to serve as chair of psychiatry and dean of the Meharry Medical College School of Medicine. He also served as assistant commissioner for psychiatric services and commissioner of mental health and mental retardation in Tennessee.
