Art historian Vivien Green Fryd will be among noted scholars discussing “Reframing the Legacy of the Capitol,” a program hosted by the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, on Tuesday, Jan. 26. The online event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 11 a.m. CT. Advance registration is required.
Panelists will consider a number of issues within the context of the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol, including how the art and architecture of the Capitol reflect who we are as a nation—our best ideals and our darkest legacies. They also will explore what historians of the material and visual culture of the United States offer in terms of interpretation of the traumatic images that flooded media all over the world in the aftermath of the attack. Fryd, professor of history of art, emerita, is the author of Art and Empire: The Politics of Ethnicity in the United States Capitol, 1815-1865.
