P. Preston Reynolds, a physician-historian at the University of Virginia and associate director of the Center for Health Disparities, will give an online talk, “The History of African Americans in Medicine,” on Monday, Dec. 7, beginning at noon CT. Reynolds’ major books and articles focus on the history of race discrimination in health care and the racial integration of hospitals, the reform of medical education and health care through a renewed commitment to medical professionalism, and the history and impact of federal programs designed to expand generalist physician and dental training in the United States.

Reynolds will return to join a panel of Vanderbilt faculty to discuss “The History of African Americans in Medicine: Abraham Flexner, Racism and Vanderbilt” on Monday, Dec. 14, beginning at noon CT. The panel will examine the complex life of Abraham Flexner and his legacy on medical education, both positive and negative, as well as Vanderbilt’s history of racism through the lens of medical education post-Flexner.
The panel discussion will be moderated by André L. Churchwell, vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion and chief diversity officer for both Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Consuelo H. Wilkins, associate dean for health equity and vice president for health equity at VUMC, will give opening remarks.
Additional panelists include the following:
- Walter K. Clair, professor of medicine and executive medical director and chief medical officer of the Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute;
- John A. McPherson, professor of medicine, vice chair for education and residency program director, Department of Medicine;
- Bonnie Miller, professor of surgery and former senior associate dean for Health Sciences Education; and
- John S. Sergent, professor of medicine, former vice chair for education and residency program director, Department of Medicine.
