New report highlights university’s actions around equity, diversity and inclusion

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Vanderbilt 2019-20 Report

Vanderbilt University has released its 2019-20 Report for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion highlighting an array of goals and initiatives currently advancing these core university values and offering a roadmap for the future.

“Vanderbilt is committed to advancing a broadly diverse and inclusive university community, where every member feels empowered to reach their potential and contribute fully to our education and research mission,” Chancellor Daniel Diermeier said. “Our differences—and a respect for alternative viewpoints and voices—is a source of strength for us. We must continue to pursue growth in this area for years to come.”

In addition to new programs and initiatives outlined in the report, Vanderbilt continues to invest significantly in EDI-focused student, faculty and staff resources, mental health and well-being support and student scholarships.

“Forward momentum happens when we join together to create a culture in which everyone is positioned for success and can thrive,” Susan R. Wente, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, said. “As a leading research university, it’s our responsibility to foster a culture of respect, caring and empathy that transcends across disciplines and university affiliations, setting an example that we are committed to actionable change for the better of all.”

Even as this report comes out, Vanderbilt is committed and working toward doing more. On July 1, 2020, university leaders issued a commitment to drive change in several key areas, including:

  • expanding and deepening dialogue with Black community members
  • increasing our investment in programming and infrastructure supporting equity, diversity and inclusion
  • deepening our commitment to enhance diversity
  • enhancing scholarship and education
  • confronting racism in Vanderbilt’s own past
  • partnering with the city of Nashville to address racial inequities

“As a Nashvillian and longtime member of the Vanderbilt community, I am proud of the progress we have made,” said Dr. Andre Churchwell, BE’75, vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion. “But there is much more work to do. With our One Vanderbilt spirit and our profound understanding of the work to be done, we shall never stop striving to learn and improve. I feel confident that we are well-positioned to drive meaningful change with our equity, diversity and inclusion efforts as we move forward.”
